Complementing its soothing and healing powers, Warm Mineral Springs is also of significant historical interest. The Smithsonian Institute has written up this historical site, listed in the National Register of Historical Places, as one of the most important underwater archaeological sites in America . Warm Mineral Springs is a rare gem, which has yielded unprecedented information about the ways of the Florida Paleo Indians. The ledges beneath the springs and 'Debris Cone' have been the focus of many underwater archaeology investigations.

The Springs has yielded discoveries of the 11,000-year-old man. The remains of prehistoric hunters including a human skull with brain matter still intact (1959, Royal), saber tooth tigers, giant sloths and tortoise, and even a camel or two have been found in the warm mysterious depths of the spring! Aside from discovering the oldest human remains ever found at that time, retired Lt. Colonel William Royal reported discovering portions of seven other human skulls and wood, bone, and shell tool artifacts. Much of the findings have been documented on video presenting hundreds of hours worth of film footage.

Scientists anticipate that future excavations may reveal findings that may date as far back as 30,000 years, to a time when Warm Mineral Springs was a dry cave.

Although its water is good for humans, it is certainly bad for metal, dimes and quarters which corrode quickly, stainless steel deteriorates so fast that diving equipment must be broken down and cleaned immediately after every dive.
